Mehndi aftercare: how to get a deep, lasting stain

9 October 2026, 4 min read

The hours after your mehndi decide how dark it turns out. The steps are simple, and most of them are about being patient.

What to expect

Fresh mehndi paste dries and starts to flake. The stain underneath is a pale orange at first. It darkens over the next 24 to 48 hours as it develops, and usually settles into a reddish brown. How dark it gets depends on the henna, your skin and how well you look after it.

The first hours

  • Keep the paste on as long as you can. Two to six hours is a common minimum. Many brides keep it on overnight.
  • Stay still and keep it dry. Avoid anything that makes you sweat hard or rub the design.
  • Seal it once it is dry. Dab a little lemon juice mixed with sugar over the paste with a cotton ball. It helps the paste stay in place and keeps the design moist.

Taking the paste off

  • Scrape or rub the dried paste off. Do not wash it off with water.
  • If bits are stuck, rub on a little oil or balm and wipe them away.
  • Avoid water for as long as you can. A few hours is the minimum, and a full day is better.

The next few days

  • The colour keeps deepening for a day or two, so do not judge it too early.
  • Apply a little oil or balm to keep the skin soft.
  • Go easy on soap, scrubbing and long soaks in water. Wear gloves for washing up.
  • Chlorinated pools fade mehndi faster.

How long it lasts

Mehndi usually lasts one to two weeks. Hands fade faster than arms because they are washed more often. The skin on the palms and fingers tends to take the deepest stain.

A safety note on black henna

Natural henna stains orange to brown. If a product gives a jet-black stain in minutes, treat it with suspicion. “Black henna” often contains PPD (para-phenylenediamine), a hair dye chemical that can cause itching, burning, swelling, blisters and lasting scars.

  • Ask your artist what is in the paste.
  • If your skin itches, burns or blisters after mehndi, wash the area and see a doctor.
  • Do not use black henna on children.

Planning your bridal stain

Book your mehndi one to two days before the wedding so the colour has time to develop. Our guide to the bridal mehndi timeline shows how to fit it around your other functions.
