Bridal mehndi timeline: when to book and when to apply

9 October 2026, 4 min read

Good bridal mehndi is partly about the artist and partly about timing. Here is a plan that works for most weddings.

As soon as your date is fixed

Book your artist. Dates in the busy wedding season fill first, and a booked artist can plan the team and schedule around you.

Have these ready when you enquire:

  • The wedding and mehndi function dates
  • The city and venue, or whether you will visit the studio
  • How many people need mehndi, including you

A few weeks before

Choose your design. Share a photo of your outfit and jewellery along with three to five reference images you like. Decide how far you want the design to go: hands only, up to the forearm, or hands and feet.

If the family wants mehndi too, tell your artist now. The team size depends on the number of people and how long you have.

One to two days before the wedding

This is the usual time for the bride’s mehndi. The stain keeps darkening for 24 to 48 hours, so applying it a day or two ahead means it is at its richest on the wedding day. Many families hold the mehndi function the evening before.

On the day of your mehndi

  • Eat first. You will not be able to use your hands for a while.
  • Wear loose sleeves that will not touch the design.
  • Plan your hours. A full bridal design takes several hours. Ask your artist for an estimate so you can schedule around hair, makeup and other rituals.
  • Arrange help. Keep someone nearby for water, food and your phone.
  • Make it comfortable. Good seating, a charger and your favourite playlist make the hours pass.

Overnight and after

Keep the paste on as long as you can, ideally overnight, and avoid water for as long as possible once it is off. Our aftercare guide has the full routine.

  2. Share your outfit and reference photos.
